If you're graduating from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, there may be no better place to take your senior photos than the campus that has been such a huge part of your college experience. After all, these aren't just graduation pictures. They are photos of your UT experience. The buildings you've walked past hundreds of times. The places where you met your friends. The landmarks that instantly say University of Tennessee. And, of course, a few spots that simply make really great photographs. I photograph senior and graduate sessions throughout Knoxville and East Tennessee, including sessions right here on the University of Tennessee Knoxville campus. Over time, I've learned which locations are iconic, which ones tend to have lines, how to work around campus crowds, and how to make a UT senior session feel personal rather than like everyone else's. The Best Locations for UT Knoxville Senior Photos There are plenty of beautiful places around the University of Tennessee campus, but some locations are almost synonymous with UT. Ayres Hall You can't talk about UT Knoxville photography without mentioning Ayres Hall. Its distinctive tower and architecture make it one of the most recognizable backdrops on campus, and it's especially meaningful for graduates who have spent years walking through this part of campus. It's also one of those locations where timing can make a big difference. Neyland Stadium For many Tennessee students, Neyland Stadium is about much more than football. It's one of the most recognizable symbols of the University of Tennessee, and it makes an incredible backdrop for senior and graduation photos. If you're a lifelong Vol fan or spent your college years cheering from the stands, including Neyland in your session is almost a no-brainer. The Torchbearer The Torchbearer is another iconic UT landmark and one of my favorite places to capture photographs that immediately feel like University of Tennessee photos. It's a particularly meaningful spot for graduates because of what the Torchbearer represents to the university and its students. Smokey Of course, no UT senior session would be complete without at least considering Smokey! There are multiple Smokey statues around campus, including the beloved Smokey the hound dog. They're fun, recognizable, and a great way to bring a little personality into your senior gallery. The UT Pedestrian Bridge The pedestrian bridge is another great option for senior portraits, particularly when you're looking for something a little different from the traditional campus landmarks. The Rock And then there's The Rock. If you've spent any time at UT, you know exactly what I'm talking about. It's colorful, ever-changing, and completely unique to the UT experience. It's also a fun way to personalize your session and incorporate something that feels a little less formal. Want the Most Iconic UT Photos Without the Crowds? Here's one of my biggest tips for UT senior photos: Pay attention to the academic calendar. Some of the most popular campus photo locations can have surprisingly long lines, especially when classes are in session. If your schedule is flexible, consider planning your senior session during:
- Summer break
- Fall break
- Spring break
- Other periods when fewer students are on campus
The difference can be huge. Instead of waiting in line at a popular location, we can move around campus more easily and spend more of your session actually taking photographs. That doesn't mean you have to schedule during a school break. Some students want the energy and activity of campus while school is in session-and that's perfectly fine, too. It really comes down to the look and experience you want. What Should You Wear for UT Senior Photos? This is one of the questions I get most often. My biggest advice is to bring options. Consider bringing:
- An outfit that feels like you
- Something a little more dressed up
- UT or Vol gear
- Your cap and gown
- An outfit connected to your major, organization, sport, or campus life
- Something sentimental or meaningful to your college experience
You don't have to choose between traditional senior portraits and something fun. We can do both. Your senior gallery should have a mixture of polished portraits, candid moments, iconic campus photographs, and images that feel completely like you. Bring a Prop-Or Something That Tells Your Story Props aren't required, but they can be a lot of fun. Your cap and gown are an obvious choice, but don't stop there. Maybe you want to bring something connected to your major. Maybe you're a Tennessee athlete. Maybe there's something from your sorority or fraternity, club, organization, or favorite campus tradition that deserves to be part of your photographs. Even something simple can make a photograph much more personal. The goal isn't to fill your session with props. The goal is to tell the story of your time at UT. A Quick Note About Alcohol and Champagne Photos I've had clients ask about incorporating champagne into their senior photos, and yes, those can make for some really fun photographs. However, University of Tennessee policies regarding alcohol on campus apply, so this isn't something I would recommend bringing onto campus without first checking the current rules. As of August 2026, alcohol possession and consumption on university property is subject to specific university policies and approved-event circumstances. Please check the current UT Knoxville policy before planning to incorporate alcoholic beverages into your session. If you want the champagne look without the alcohol, a non-alcoholic option can also create the same celebratory feel. Parking for Your UT Senior Photo Session Parking around UT can be confusing, particularly if you aren't familiar with campus. As of August 2026, UT parking rules require visitors to follow the university's current parking regulations, so don't assume a campus lot is free simply because you're arriving after hours or on a weekend. For evening sessions, however, there is another option worth knowing about. Free City of Knoxville Parking After 6 PM The City of Knoxville operates several downtown parking garages that offer free parking after 6 PM on weekdays, with weekend availability varying by garage and special events. Some of the downtown garages that can be useful for visitors coming to the UT area include:
- State Street Garage
- Locust Street Garage
- Main Avenue Garage
- Market Square Garage
These are not UT parking lots, so you'll be walking from downtown to campus, but for an evening photo session they can be a useful alternative to trying to find campus parking. Always check current City of Knoxville and UT parking information before your session, especially around football games and major events when parking rules and availability can change. What Photographer Knows UT Knoxville Best for Photos? This might be one of the most important questions to ask when choosing your photographer. You don't necessarily need someone who has simply photographed at UT. You want someone who understands how to photograph you at UT. As a photographer who regularly photographs senior and graduate sessions in Knoxville and throughout East Tennessee, I know that the best session isn't necessarily about hitting every landmark. It's about knowing how to combine the iconic locations with the places and details that actually mean something to you. Maybe that's Neyland Stadium. Maybe it's Ayres Hall. Maybe it's Smokey. Maybe it's The Rock. Or maybe it's a quiet corner of campus that nobody else would think twice about-but where you spent some of your favorite college memories. That's where I think senior photography becomes more than just a pretty picture. It becomes a record of where you were at this point in your life.
