I get asked all the time where my favorite spots are for engagement photos in and around the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There are so many beautiful places to choose from, but in this post, I want to highlight one of my favorites: Townsend, Tennessee.
Townsend is known as the "Peaceful Side of the Smokies," and it is easy to see why.
Unlike the busier tourist areas of Gatlinburg and Sevierville, Townsend is a small mountain community with a much quieter, more relaxed feel. You won't find high-rise condos or rows of massive hotels here. Instead, you'll find cozy vacation rentals, cabins, campgrounds, locally owned businesses, beautiful mountain scenery, and plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy the Smokies.
For couples looking for a destination engagement session, Townsend offers something pretty special: the beauty of the Smoky Mountains without quite as much of the hustle and bustle.
Your Engagement Photos Don't Have to Be Where You're Getting Married
Engagement photos are such a special part of the wedding experience, and we love photographing them for our wedding clients.
But here's something I think more couples should consider:
Your engagement session doesn't have to happen where you're getting married.
We photograph quite a few couples who are getting married somewhere completely different but choose to travel to East Tennessee for their engagement photos.
The Smoky Mountains are a destination in their own right, and Townsend makes a wonderful home base for a mountain engagement session.
Whether you're planning a wedding in Tennessee or you're getting married somewhere else entirely, spending a day in the Smokies for your engagement photos can make the session feel like a little adventure of its own.
Townsend and the Great Smoky Mountains
One of the biggest reasons Townsend works so well for engagement photography is its proximity to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Townsend sits just outside the park and provides easy access to the mountains, forests, rivers, and scenic areas that make this part of East Tennessee so beautiful.
And if you know me, you know that photographing in the Smokies is a pretty big part of what I do.
I am a native of the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, and I know this national park extremely well. I am also a licensed photographer in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and I regularly photograph couples, families, weddings, and engagements throughout the Smokies and across East Tennessee.

One of my favorites is The Lily Barn, a beautiful greenhouse and wedding venue with gorgeous grounds that feel a little like stepping into a secret garden.

But Townsend has so much more to offer than one venue. That's part of what makes the area such a wonderful choice for engagement photos.
What Should You Wear for Smoky Mountain Engagement Photos?
My biggest advice is simple: wear something that feels like you.
You don't have to show up in an outfit you've never worn before just because you're having professional photos taken.
Choose clothing that makes you feel comfortable and confident, and consider bringing two looks if you'd like some variety. Coordinating outfits usually photograph better than perfectly matching, and layers are especially helpful in the mountains because the weather can change quickly.
And please bring comfortable shoes!
You may be walking on uneven ground, grass, gravel, or trails during your session. The last thing I want is for you to spend your engagement session worrying about your feet.
The Most Important Thing: Don't Worry About Posing
If you're nervous about being in front of a camera, you're not alone.
Most couples aren't professional models-and you don't need to be.
You don't need to know how to pose, where to put your hands, or what to do with your face. That's my job.
I want your engagement session to feel like the two of you spending time together, not like you're standing around trying to perform for a camera.
We'll walk, talk, laugh, move, and enjoy the scenery. I'll guide you when you need direction and let the natural moments happen when they don't.
